Forty two.
Around here, that’s not The Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything. That’s the record number of consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures, set in 1980.
Some doubted that record would ever be reached again. But in July, the talk began. Was 2011 the year?
If so, August 12. . . today. . . would be the day.
Now if you’ve never lived through a slew of 100°+ days, let me assure you that there comes a point (and it falls somewhere north of a fortnight, but well shy of 42) where you feel like you ought to have something to show for your suffering.
And when Days 31-35 set five consecutive high temperature records (107°, 110°, 109°, 108° and 107°) and the forecasts for Days 36-41 are for at least 104°. . . well, you start to think you earned it.
So when yesterday–Day 41–clouds popped up, spit on us a bit and dropped temperatures 10 degrees in about as many minutes, all across the Metroplex, North Texans channelled their inner Ultimate Dog Tease dog and cried
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

LOVE IT!! NM is land of chili… so will have to make this!!! Cute, cute!!
I’m one of those North Texans who cried Nooooooo! While I immensely enjoyed the 10 degree cool off, it was only momentary. It would have been nice to have said we set a record since the temps are climbing back up anyway!
Love your chili pepper card, too!
This card is appropriate for the “chilly” day that we had yesterday in North Texas. So close to the record…
Holly, Love your card! It is just so appropriate for we Texans! We were very fortunate as we got 4 1/4 inches of rain last night along with quite a lightning show! It was a very welcome sight! TFS!
I’m not sure what I appreciate more . . . your cute card, the awesome dog video, or your Douglas Adams reference!
Sorry about the record . . . you did deserve it after 40 days. But right about now, I think I’m with most Texans wishing we were setting records for having such a cool, damp summer!
That card is adorable….and I could so relate to the story. I haven’t actually looked up stats, but yesterday on Sarah’s blog she said that we had 13 more days to go to break a record of 69 triple digit days that was set back in 1925! That was in Austin which is an hour from me, whereas you’re about 3 hrs from me. I was actually kind of looking forward to that since I couldn’t imagine an August day under 100. Til I got up today and it was overcast. Not sure what the official high was, but I am pretty sure it hovered at only around 90. I can take the heat so much better than I can the cold, so it was a bit of a let down to be so close to such a long standing record! So I really got a giggle out of your post! Hugssss
